Have your kids be a part of a one-of-a-kind experience at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum! This hands on S.T.E.A.M. camp revs up with exciting projects and a behind the scenes study of the coolest cars on the planet.


Most S.T.E.M. based summer camps leave out a crucial component related to many science and technology focused occupations. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are all critical skills necessary for the jobs of tomorrow.


What makes S.T.E.A.M. different from S.T.E.M. is the Art. We believe that composition and design is just as necessary for the the engineers and scientists of tomorrow.


Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum camp members will examine all five S.T.E.A..M. components throughout their time at camp against the backdrop of the some of the most historically significant race cars in the world..

S.T.E.A.M. Education With Race Cars!

Through the important process of design, development, testing, and troubleshooting their own CO2 powered race car, our campers learn resilience, self-confidence., and critical judgement.  Throughout their time at camp, our participants are often matched in team and solo activities  to test their practical understanding of recently taught curriculum. We encourage all participants to embrace our museum’s theme, “The Spirit of Competition” in a positive, museum-based enviornment.

CREATING A CO2 CAR

  • Session Hours : Throughout entire camp.
  • Session Goal : Design and build a car powered by a Co2 cartridge from scratch.
  • Materials Used : 3x3x12 inch block of balsa wood, Co2 cartridges, sandpaper, basic hand tools.
  • S.T.E.A.M. Principals Taught : Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math are all covered during this project.

AERODYNAMIC TESTING

  • Session Hours : Three hours.
  • Session Goal : Team building and cooperative learning. Learn to analyze air flow around cars and develop technics to improve a cars efficiency.
  • Materials Used : Simeone Foundation model wind tunnel.
  • S.T.E.A.M. Principals Taught : Science, Technology, Engineering, Math

DESIGN and SCULPTURE

  • Session Hours : Two hours.
  • Session Goal : Learn basics of perspective and getting a design from paper to a three-dimensional object. b. Campers will learn to draw museum cars and then sculpt them out of clay.
  • Materials Used : Modeling clay, pencils, paper.

SNAP CIRCUITS WIRING

  • Session Hours : 1 Hour
  • Session Goal : Learn basic wiring concepts, computer functions through sophisticated circuits, and how these concepts relate to the automobile.
  • Materials Used : Snap circuits clip together wiring boards.

GEARS AND PULLEYS

  • Session Hours : 1 Hour
  • Session Goal : Understand how gears and pulleys offer many different mechanical advantages and connecting these concepts to automotive transmissions and other drivetrain components.
  • Materials Used : Tinker sets gear and pulley peg boards.
  • S.T.E.A.M. Principals Taught : Technology, Engineering,

SODA BOTTLE RACECARS

  • Session Hours : 6 Hour
  • Session Goal : Develop analytical skills, development of a design, data driven modifications, Newton’s laws, drag, friction, mass, inertia, momentum, kinetic energy.
  • Materials Used : Soda bottle race car construction set. Simeone Foundation model wind tunnel.
  • S.T.E.A.M. Principals Taught : Science, Technology, Engineering, Math

EGG DROP

  • Session Hours : 3 Hours
  • Session Goal : Create a vessel that can protect an egg from a two story drop from the museum’s balcony.
  • Materials Used : Foam cups, cardboard, foam peanuts, rubber bands, popsicle sticks, bubble wrap, eggs
  • S.T.E.A.M. Principals Taught : Science, Technology, Engineering, Math

HYDRAULICS

  • Session Hours : 2 Hours
  • Session Goal : Using radio controlled cars to understand shock absorbers and chassis dynamics.
  • Materials Used : Water, syringes, rubber tubing, pre-built can crusher
  • S.T.E.A.M. Principals Taught : Science, Technology, Engineering, Math

RADIO CONTROLLED RACE CARS

  • Session Hours : 2 Hours
  • Session Goal : Using radio controlled cars to understand shock absorbers and chassis dynamics.
  • Materials Used : Radio-controlled, battery-powered race cars.
  • S.T.E.A.M. Principals Taught : Science, Technology, Engineering, Math

HISTORY

  • All of the ideas and concepts taught during S.T.E.A.M. lessons are connected to the cars in the museum collection through discussions that take place at the cars themselves, demonstrations of these cars, historic videos and discussions in the classroom.​

The ratio may vary from program to program or activity to activity. In some programs, the ration may be as low as four students to a staff member. In others, it may be as high as ten to one. In all cases, students are well supervised to ensure maximum safety and fun.

About the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum

Located in Philadelphia, PA, the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum is one of the world’s greatest collections of racing sports cars. Through our theme, “The Spirit of Competition”, we celebrate the history and evolution of these magnificent machines.

Assembled over 50 years by Dr. Frederick Simeone, the Museum contains over 75 historically significant cars including Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Mercedes, Jaguar, Bentley, Porsche, Aston Martin, Corvette, Ford, and more.
